The problem with WVU to the ACC is two-fold


Money and Time.

WVU simply does not have 81.8 million dollars laying about and if it wants to leave the Big-12 is had to pay that to do so and even then it has an 18 month window. If WVU waits until the current media contract expires on July 1 202:

It will save all of that money 81.8 + 81.8 + plus however much they both pay to leave earlier than 18 months which is now down to 10 months roughly. The figure is estimated to be between 200 and 400 million split 8 ways. So, something on the order of 25 to 50 million member.

Plus each annual media pay out - currently projected to be 26.9 the year after Texas and Oklahoma leave, but which is still 40.9 until they do. Both amount grow each per the current contract about 4 million per year. That is going be roughly 45 million for 2021, assume have that growth rate after the exit, so 28.9 in 2022, 30.9 in 2023 and 32.9 in 2024. Those are wild guesses but there is noting solid to base it on at this time. Still, that is 136.8 million per member.

plus T3 rights of 15 million per year based in part on being in the Big-12 footprint

Potentially the Big-12 will host a CCG if it expands before the contract expires and I do not know that figure at all. It has been speculated to be 20 mullion but another party stated it was equal to 1 share of the media package which would make it 40.9 at present. That would be re-negotiated in any effective membership changes. I assumed just 4 million per member at this time.

So, if WVU stays until Jul1 2025.

It will pull in
Exit Fee money of 25 to 50 million
Media Payout of 136.8 million
T3 rights payout of 60 million
Potentially at least one year of a CCG 4 million

That comes to 233.8 to 253.8 million.

That is a lot of money to leave on the table and be forced to pay an additional 82 million to do so.

I do not want to be in the ACC. The ACC works just fine and I like the conference a great deal or I would not be here. But, the ACC and WVU are apples and oranges. We do not belong there and will never fit in, not totally be welcome no matter the value we might bring.
